MIAMI — The Miami Heat, along with the Micky & Madeleine Arison Family Foundation and Carnival Corporation, announced a $1 million donation to Direct Relief to help recovery efforts in Jamaica following Hurricane Melissa.
Direct Relief is a humanitarian aid organization that provides medical assistance to communities affected by poverty or emergencies.
“Our hearts go out to the people of Jamaica,” said Eric Woolworth, president of the Heat Group’s business operations. “In Florida, we know the destruction a Category 5 storm can bring. Direct Relief provides the kind of long-term support that’s crucial for recovery.”
Carnival CEO Josh Weinstein said the company’s ties to Jamaica run deep. “We need to support its communities now more than ever,” he said. “Donating to Direct Relief will help deliver vital assistance to families whose lives have been upended.”
Direct Relief said it has prepared 100 field medic packs for deployment, each containing first-aid and triage supplies.
The organization also shared its full medical inventory list with Jamaica’s Ministry of Health and is ready to send additional medicines and supplies as needed.
