Everglades brush fire spreads to at least 19,200 acres

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — A brush fire that has damaged at least 42,000 acres continued to burn on Thursday afternoon in the Florida Everglades.

According to the Florida Forest Service rangers, about 10% had been contained by 2:10 p.m., and there were helicopters involved in the firefight and airboats in surveying.

The smoke was impacting air quality in Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties, and there were also afternoon rain and thunderstorms in the area.

The National Weather Service issued an air quality alert on Wednesday and warned on Thursday that those who “are sensitive to particle pollution” will need to avoid being outdoors.
