BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. — Two people died after a helicopter crashed through the roof of a vacant warehouse on Monday in Boynton Beach, according to fire rescue personnel.
The Robinson R44 helicopter crashed at about 12:30 p.m. in the 3800 block of South Congress Avenue, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
Air traffic control transmissions obtained by Local 10 show that the pilot reported an engine problem and said he needed to land in a field.
“There were no survivors,” said Boynton Beach Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Matt Oxendine.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board were investigating the fatal crash.
“We secured the scene,” Oxendine said.
Angela Povio owns Master Auto Body, which is located right next door.
“We came running out, we couldn’t see anything at all. We had no idea what was going on,” Povio said. “It happened right in our backyard and two lives were lost. It makes us so sad.”
Spencer Winslow works inside the shop and also heard the commotion.
“I just figured it was a body shop noise,” he said. “But when I heard it was two people, it was pretty sad.”
According to authorities, the warehouse was vacant.
