According to Broward Sheriff’s Office spokesman Carey Codd, deputies responded to the 700 block of Deer Creek Emerald Way West just before 4 a.m. after receiving a report about a burglary.

Codd said deputies discovered that multiple people had been burglarizing unoccupied vehicles in the community.

Home surveillance video obtained by Local 10 News shows a man running through that neighborhood just after 4 a.m. He appears to try to hide under a parked car before surrendering with his hands up, as police lights flash in the distance. But then he flees the scene.

“After deputies arrived, at some point, the driver of the suspect vehicle fled the area and crashed into a lake near Lakeside Way and Lakeside Drive,” Codd said in a news release.

Codd said one “adult male in the suspect vehicle” made it out of the water and was taken into custody.

He said BSO divers later recovered two other males from the lake, however both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Dispatch audio obtained by Local 10 captured the frantic moments following the crash.

“They are probably about 40 or 50 feet out in the middle of the canal and they just went down with the vehicle and they’re not coming back up,” the deputy stated on the call.

Neighbors along Lakeside Drive and Deer Creek say they were shocked by the heavy police presence early Tuesday morning in what they describe as a quiet and safe community.

“They probably thought this was an exit,” said Allen Gelman, who lives nearby. “I’m assuming you have three entrances into this community, but two of them are dead ends.”

Gelman told Local 10’s Saira Anwer that he was not aware of any recent car break-ins in the neighborhood.

“I’m always going to lock my car doors,” he added. “I always lock my house now that I know this.”

The identities of those involved in the incident have not yet been released.

Codd said the investigation remains ongoing.
