FLORIDA CITY, Fla. — A man in a wheelchair was killed Thursday morning in a crash involving a tanker truck in Florida City, police confirmed to Local 10 News.
According to an officer at the scene, the driver of a tanker truck was driving down North Krome Avenue when he struck a homeless man in a wheelchair at about 4:37 a.m.
The officer said the 800 block of North Krome Avenue was dark at the time when the crash occurred and the driver didn’t see the victim in the roadway.
Florida City police Sgt. David Hunsberger confirmed the victim was pronounced dead at the scene by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
According to Hunsberger, the driver is cooperating with the investigation, which has since been handed over to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Bureau.
The victim’s identity has not yet been released, however Hunsberger confirmed that the victim was an elderly man.
