Retired school teacher found dead after house fire in Davie

Man's death remains under investigation after fire in Davie

DAVIE, Fla. — A retired school teacher’s death remained under investigation on Monday after a residential fire in Davie.

A representative from the United Teachers of Dade identified him as Martin Hoffer. Firefighters reported finding him dead inside a bathtub on Sunday.

Lisa Binger said she heard a popping sound on Sunday morning and then saw dark smoke from her neighbor’s home along Southwest 21 Court.

“The whole roof caved in,” Binger said.

Residents described Hoffer, a retired Miami-Dade County Public Schools teacher, as a widower and “a great” neighbor.

“He was a good man. He truly was,” a neighbor said.
