MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A deputy-involved shooting occurred Thursday morning outside a Walmart in southwest Miami-Dade, authorities confirmed.
According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, the shooting occurred just outside the doors of the Walmart Supercenter located at 21151 South Dixie Highway in Miami-Dade’s Goulds area.

According to Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz, a deputy patrolling the area was alerted to a subject inside the store who was allegedly stealing merchandise.
Cordero-Stutz said the man ran away from the deputy, and the two got into a physical altercation just outside the store’s front doors.
“During that physical altercation, the subject showed that he was in fact armed,” said Cordero-Stutz. “Our deputy did in fact discharge his service weapon. The subject fled and eventually collapsed on the street just outside.”
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials confirmed one person was transported by ground to a local hospital, where police said he was later pronounced deceased.
“This individual had an extensive criminal past,” said Cordero-Stutz.
Local 10’s Hannah Yechivi observed many of the Walmart’s employees gathered at a nearby Burger King, as the store had been apparently closed due to the investigation.
For some of them, shoplifting at the store is nothing new.
“Oh yeah, a lot of people in self-checkout,” said employee Melanie Fernandez. “Me personally, I had worked as a cashier in self-checkout. They get mad too when you tell them, ‘You didn’t pay this, you didn’t pay that,’ and they walk out.”
Cordero-Stutz said the deputy who was involved in the shooting was not injured, and no injuries were reported from Walmart employees or customers.
The shooting is being investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
