MIAMI — Just before 4 a.m. Tuesday, when most people were still fast asleep, a 13-year-old girl inside her Miami home woke up to something terrifying.
There was a stranger inside her bedroom.
Police said they responded to a call for an intruder inside a home on Northwest 10th Avenue in Miami.
“There was a man that had entered her daughter’s room, our officers arrived on scene by the time they got to the scene the subject was already gone,” said Miami Police Officer Michael Vega.
The girl’s mother was too shaken up to talk on camera, but neighbor Allen Manns, who’s lived there for more than 50 years, said he was stunned.
“Shocked, didn’t think that it was possible in this area because everybody is working people, everybody is friendly, everybody sticks to their own, so it was something I didn’t think it would happen in this area,” he said.
Police said the intruder used a back gate to gain access to the property, walked through their yard, possibly using a ladder or bench, and minutes later was inside the room of the family’s teenage daughter.
The intruder stole the girl’s phone and wallet, police added.
“This was a black male, dressed in all black, wearing a black ski mask,” said Vega.
Officers were seen dusting off a window, hoping a fingerprint will point them to the intruder.
The girl’s mother said she tracked her daughter’s stolen phone and found it dumped a few blocks away, inside a trash can.
Officers said they also analyzed the phone for fingerprints.
“This is the perfect time for everyone to check their homes, make sure that every window is locked,” said Vega. “Also, its important to have good lighting around your home, the lighting deters thieves or criminals from being seen.”
Miami police said they had a person detained but have yet to announce an arrest as of the time of this story’s publication.
