According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the shooting occurred around 7:35 p.m. in the northbound lanes of the highway near the Golden Glades Interchange, just south of Hard Rock Stadium.

Troopers said the driver of a silver Hyundai was shot and subsequently crashed into a black Cadillac SUV that was not involved in the shooting.

“The preliminary investigation revealed that an off-duty Biscayne Park Police Department sergeant was traveling northbound on the Florida Turnpike, when he observed a silver Hyundai weaving in and out of traffic,” the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. “He then heard a loud bang and observed the silver Hyundai crash into a black Cadillac. As the off-duty sergeant approached the Hyundai, the passenger exited the vehicle and stated the driver had been shot.”
