“I loved him and he loved me, said Wells’ mother, Mary Brown.

Brown said she spoke to her son 30 minutes before he was fatally shot.

“He said, ‘Mom, I’m on my way to you,’” she recalled. “I said come on son, I’m waiting.”

Police said Wells was playing dominoes with two other people in front of his restaurant, Winning and Won Turkey Legs, located off Northwest 17th Avenue in Liberty City, when someone walked up to him and opened fire.

Wells’ girlfriend Lulu said she saw it all unfold.

“I was right next to him,” she said. “I’m still dealing with it now. I know for sure he would not like me to sit here and cry all day.”

Surveillance video shows the moments immediately after the shooting, when a man in a white shirt could be seen running as Wells stumbled and fell to the ground.

Wells launched Wheels Up, Guns Down in an effort to keep kids off of the streets.

“He was for the community, he tried to stop the violence,” said Brown.

A large crowd came out for a vigil and ride-out Monday evening in Wells’ honor.

“To you who shot my son, you shot a man of God, you can run, but you can’t hide,” Brown said.

Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS as police continue the search for the gunman.
