DANIA BEACH, Fla. — A man and his small dog both died after a fire erupted Monday night at a home in Dania Beach, first responders confirmed.
According to Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue, the fire was reported at about 9:45 p.m. in the 2600 block of Southwest 54th Place.
Firefighters said a neighbor across the street initially reported the incident.
“Upon arrival, firefighters observed heavy smoke and flames coming from the rear of the home,” BSFR said in an email to Local 10 News. “Crews immediately initiated a fire attack while simultaneously conducting a search and rescue operation.”
According to BSFR, a man was found inside the home and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
Firefighters confirmed that a small dog was found inside a kennel in the home and also did not survive.
“More than 35 BSFR personnel responded to the scene along with firefighters from Hollywood Fire Rescue,” BSFR said. “The fire was brought under control in approximately 10 minutes, successfully preventing flames from spreading to adjacent homes.”
Ricky Dialsingh lives right next door to the victim and was heartbroken to learn his neighbor passed away.
“I’m so sad that he passed away…so sad,” Dialsingh said. “He was inside and I didn’t know that. His dog died -- his dog died in the fire too.”
A man who identified himself as a relative of the victim told Local 10 News that the victim was in his early 50s.
The Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire, but BSO’s Homicide and Crime Scene units are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal fire.
Foul play is not suspected at this time, however the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.
The victim’s identity has not been released.
