Coconut Creek commissioners voted unanimously on Monday to approve the settlement, which will not prevent an expansion. Commissioner Joshua Rydell said it was a victory.

“The landfill is eventually going to close ... we were able to get an agreement with Waste Management to guarantee the closure of a landfill,” Rydell said.

In February, Broward County commissioners voted to approve a horizontal expansion of the landfill that Waste Management operates at 2700 Wiles Road, in Pompano Beach.

With the settlement, Waste Management promises not to make the landfill any bigger in the future.

It also plans to start closing the landfill in 25 years.

The Broward County Commission must sign the deal before it’s official.
