MIAMI — Miami is taking center stage in the global sports world, and now, one local museum is bringing that energy indoors.

The Perez Art Museum Miami is hosting a one-of-a-kind show with its new exhibition.

Inside the museum, patrons will now see sports action galore with the new “Get in the Game: Sports, Art, Culture Exhibition.”

“Miami has a huge appetite for sports, as we all know,” PAMM Director Franklin Sirmans said. “We love our teams. It’s one of the places that we all come together, cheer and root for exactly the same thing and how beautiful is that?”

From basketball, to tennis, to soccer, the timing couldn’t be more fitting.

“It’s about all of the sports that Miami has to offer, and we all know that we are standing here right now in the middle of the Miami Open. We have F-1 coming up, we just had the World Baseball Classic, we have the World Cup coming up, our Inter Miami team is back on the pitch again already, the Heat are going towards the playoffs, the Marlins start this week -- I mean, it’s just an embarrassment of riches,” Sirmans said.

With Miami serving as a global sports hub, the museum’s director and the assistant curator say this exhibition was designed to reflect that energy through art.

“We often think about sports people and arts people being completely separate, but this exhibition is really the proof that we all share one thing, which is passion,” curatorial assistant Fabiana Sotillo said.

From paintings and sculptures to video installations, the works aim to reach an audience that doesn’t always walk through museum doors.

“If there’s a sports fanatic that doesn’t necessarily know about art or appreciate art, we want them to come in and leave the exhibition appreciating art a little more,” Sotillo said.

Some pieces even capture the raw emotion of the game.

“The after game of losing a game, and the feelings that these players have, but also the fans -- we see people almost like grieving, but it’s grieving in community,” Sotillo said.

The exhibition is not your average museum experience as you’re actually encouraged to jump in and play.

“Having grown up playing different sports, is that it brings us together, and I think this exhibition is an opportunity for us to think about a lot of the commonalities that we all share,” Sirmans said.
