The utility company says it has been preparing throughout the week and is coordinating with other utilities, state officials, and the Florida Reliability Coordinating Council (FRCC), which issued a Generating Capacity Advisory due to high electric demand and the potential for tight operating margins.

FPL officials say all available power plants are operating to meet increased demand, and crews, equipment, and materials have been prepositioned in areas expecting the coldest temperatures.

Lineworkers and vegetation staff have been increased to respond quickly to any localized outages.

The company is also preparing voluntary energy management programs that could be activated during peak cold-weather hours and is monitoring the electric grid around the clock.

Even with sufficient statewide power supply, FPL warns that isolated outages could occur due to extreme temperatures. Crews are already in place to respond quickly if needed.

FPL is also urging customers to manage energy use at home to stay comfortable while saving on heating costs.

The company recommends setting thermostats to a comfortable temperature — around 68 degrees or lower — and adjusting settings gradually to avoid costly auxiliary heating.

“We are prepared, watching conditions around the clock and ready to act quickly,” the company wrote in a news release on Saturday. “Stay warm, stay safe, and continue to monitor FPL.com and our social media channels for updates.”
