Shooting reported at Miami Gardens apartment complex
Miami Gardens police are investigating a shooting that occurred early Tuesday morning at an apartment complex.
Next week is the sentencing hearing for confessed Parkland school shooter Nikolas Cruz.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday afternoon that there is an investigation at the Broward County courthouse after the Broward State Attorney’s Office provided information about a complaint from a juror in the Parkland school shooter’s penalty phase.
Closing arguments will be held Tuesday in the penalty phase of the Parkland school shooter’s case.
The prosecution team that is seeking the death penalty for Nikolas Cruz, the Parkland school shooter, started to call witnesses after Assistant State Attorney Michael J. Satz delivered his opening statement on July 18.
The prosecution’s rebuttal started on Sept. 27, they called seven witnesses during four days in court and rested on Thursday afternoon — after responding to the sexual abuse allegation.
The Parkland school shooter’s defense called an expert witness on Monday to testify about research on fetal alcohol spectrum disorder or FASD, his assessment of the records on the case, and tests performed at the Broward County main jail during a five-hour visit on May 20, 2021.
The public defenders who are trying to save the Parkland school shooter’s life are focusing their case on his childhood development and mental health before the 2018 Valentine’s Day massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
Psychiatrists testified on Thursday that when the Parkland school shooter was a 9-year-old student he threatened to stab a teacher and an aide, hit a classmate with a lunch box, hit someone with a rock, and later as a teenager demonstrated “a preoccupation with guns and the military” and was dreaming of “killing others” and being “covered in blood.”
Broward County Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer, who is presiding over the Parkland school shooter’s death penalty phase, was preparing to welcome back the jury on Tuesday morning.
