Workers race to prepare ice rink at loanDepot park for NHL Winter Classic

HIALEAH, Fla. — It is not something seen every day: an ice rink on a baseball field.

With 10 days to go before the NHL Winter Classic at loanDepot Park, crews are racing to transform the Miami Marlins’ home field into an outdoor hockey venue. The game is expected to draw more than 35,000 fans.

Building an ice rink that meets NHL and safety standards is a complex task, especially inside a baseball stadium. After months of planning, workers have just 10 days to assemble the rink.

More than 200 workers are involved in the construction. The rink will use about 3,000 gallons of glycol coolant and feature a high-tech system that monitors ice temperatures around the clock.

“Tickets sales have been amazing. I mean two Stanley Cups doesn’t hurt things either to engage the hockey market down here so it’s been great,” said Dean Matsuzaki, the NHL’s executive vice president of events.

The Florida Panthers will face the New York Rangers on Jan. 2, 2026. Tickets are still available.
