MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Troy Aikman, ESPN analyst and Hall of Fame quarterback, who advised the Miami Dolphins during their recent general manager search, will also assist in the team’s search for a head coach, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported Saturday.
Rapoport also confirmed that Miami has requested to interview San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, who previously served as the New York Jets head coach.
Rapoport said newly appointed general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan is leading the search alongside owner Stephen Ross, with Aikman serving in a consulting role.
On the same day the Dolphins finalized their agreement with Sullivan, the team reached out to former Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh, signaling interest in meeting with him for the coaching position, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
He reported that the Atlanta Falcons recently interviewed Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver for their head coaching vacancy.
The Dolphins have also requested an interview with Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak for their head coaching job, and he is expected to speak with the team on Saturday, sources told NFL insider Tom Pelissero.
Pelissero said Kubiak has conducted six interviews so far during the NFL bye week, making him the most sought-after young candidate in this coaching cycle.
He also reported that Miami has requested an interview with Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula for their head coaching job. Shula — the grandson of legendary Dolphins coach Don Shula — is eligible to interview next week after the Rams’ wild card game vs. Carolina.
The coaching search comes after Dolphins fired Mike McDaniel who went 35-33 in four seasons with two playoff appearances and no playoff wins. He was named the 11th head coach of the Dolphins on Feb. 7, 2022.
Miami has missed the playoffs over the last two seasons and have not recorded a playoff win since 2000, the NFL’s longest active winless drought.
