Miami Dolphins not expected to fire Mike McDaniel following 1-6 start to season, sources say

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The Miami Dolphins are not expected to fire head coach Mike McDaniel following the team’s 1-6 start to the season, NFL insider Ian Rapoport confirmed Monday.

The Dolphins were routed 31-6 by the Cleveland Browns at Huntington Bank Field on Sunday.

McDaniel has a 29-29 career record in the regular season and is 0-2 in the playoffs.

In the playoffs, McDaniel lost in the wild card round in both the 2022 (Buffalo) and 2023 seasons (Kansas City).

The Dolphins finished as the top scoring offense in 2023, but entered Week 7 as the NFL’s 24th ranked unit just two seasons later.

McDaniel on Sunday said he wasn’t spending any time worrying about his job security, calling it a distraction from his responsibilities to the team.

“The way I look at this job is I find it very offensive to all parties involved if I’m thinking about having the job -- I need to be doing my job,” he said. “So, for as long as I coach for the Miami Dolphins and this organization, they’ll get everything from me. And I refuse to spend my time thinking about (my job security.

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was benched for rookie seventh-round pick Quinn Ewers after throwing three interceptions, including two on consecutive drives late in the game. His 10 interceptions are tied with Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Geno Smith for the most in the league.

Tagovailoa also tied Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence for the most games with three or more interceptions since 2020, with eight.

“Definitely not happy, not proud of where I’m at with my play, with how I’ve gone about things this year,”Tagovailoa told reporters after the game. “I know I’ve gotta be a lot better — and I’ve been better for the Miami Dolphins in years past. But this isn’t years past, this is this year."

Miami also has the last-ranked rush defense in the NFL and allowed three touchdowns to Browns running back Quinshon Judkins on Sunday.

McDaniel is expected to hold a press conference on Monday afternoon.
