Spoelstra would succeed Steve Kerr and lead Team USA through the next FIBA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

Spoelstra, 54, served as a lead assistant under Kerr on the 2024 Olympic squad that won gold in Paris after beating France 98-87 in the championship game. The victory marked the Americans’ fifth straight Olympic gold and their 17th overall.

He has led the Heat to two NBA championships and six trips to the NBA Finals during his tenure. He’s currently the league’s longest-serving head coach, ranking fifth all-time in postseason victories and holding the record for most wins in Heat history.

The Miami Heat made NBA Play-In Tournament history by becoming the first No. 10 seed to advance to the playoffs during the 2024-25 season, defeating the Atlanta Hawks 123-114 in overtime to claim the Eastern Conference’s final playoff spot.

However, after that historic run, the Heat entered the postseason as the No. 8 seed, faced the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round, and were swept in four games.

Neither USA Basketball nor the Miami Heat have publicly commented on the reported decision.
