MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The Miami Dolphins’ secondary took another hit Tuesday morning when strong safety Ashtyn Davis limped off the field during practice, favoring his left leg.
Davis later emerged on crutches and was seen wearing a boot on his left foot, according to Omar Kelly of the Miami Herald.
It is unclear how he sustained the injury at this time.
He was surrounded by teammates offering support, including defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
Tuesday’s practice marked the first time players wore pads in training camp."
Davis, 28, played five seasons with the New York Jets prior to joining Miami, appearing in 69 games with 22 starts.
While the severity of his injury has not been confirmed, the concern and frustration expressed on the field suggested the Dolphins may be bracing for another extended absence.
His injury compounds a growing crisis in Miami’s defensive backfield.
Behind starter Minkah Fitzpatrick, the Dolphins’ current depth consists of Elijah Campbell, second-year players John Saunders Jr and Patrick McMorris. Safety Ife Melonwu is also on the team’s active non-football injury list and has been rehabbing on the sideline.
The team has also suffered losses at cornerback early in training camp.
Kader Kohou was listed as “day to day” by Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel after sustaining a right leg injury over the weekend, and veteran Artie Burns was ruled out for the season with a torn ACL suffered on the opening day of camp.
In response, Miami signed veteran defensive back Mike Hilton, who has played both slot corner and safety during his career, along with former Raiders and Patriots cornerback Jack Jones.
With several weeks remaining before the regular season begins, the Dolphins will need to rely on their depth and recent additions as they navigate mounting injuries in the secondary.
