MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The Miami Dolphins welcomed fans to their first public training camp session Saturday morning, but much of the buzz started before the first snap.
The team announced the signing of cornerback Jack Jones, formerly with the Raiders and Patriots, following the loss of Artie Burns to a torn ACL earlier in the week.
Miami also added veteran defensive back Mike Hilton, who started 10 games at safety for the Bengals last season and has 13 career interceptions.
Cornerback depth may remain a concern, as nickel corner Kader Kohou appeared to injure his lower right leg during practice. He limped and then gingerly walked off under his own power and did not return to practice.
Davis on Fitzpatrick, turnovers, and Weaver’s defense
Safety Ashtyn Davis, a free-agent addition from the New York Jets, shared insights on Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver’s scheme and his own role in it.
“As a third-level player, I see everything in front of me,” Davis said. “So just really getting that communication out fast and allowing the other guys in front of me to get lined up — making their job easier.”
Davis, 28, also praised the presence of veteran safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, who recorded the first interception of camp during Saturday’s session where a loud applause was heard from Dolphins fans.
“Just learning the game within the game with him — how to watch film, seeing tendencies, picking up whatever I can from his habits,” Davis said. “He’s been a big tone-setter, both on tape and out here.”
Davis, known for his ball-hawking tendencies with eight career interceptions and multiple forced fumbles despite limited starts, said turnovers are top priority in Miami’s defense.
“We’ve got to produce turnovers,” he said. “Getting the ball is a big emphasis this year — making sure we get the rock, because that’s really all that matters on defense.”
Stock up for Duck
Dolphins cornerback Storm Duck is positioning himself as a key piece in Miami’s secondary amid a competitive cornerback race.
Duck, 24, who signed with Miami as an undrafted rookie last season, has made a name for himself not only with his memorable name, but for his preparation and mindset.
Duck said he’s adapting from college to the NFL by diving deeper into film and game planning.
“We’re just honing in on that and just watching a lot more film,” he said.
On the wide-open competition for starting roles at cornerback, Duck underlined the coaches’ main criteria.
“Yeah, I think consistency, day in and day out, that’s what the coaches want to see. Just consistency (and) being the guy that the team can trust, the organization can trust, he said.
Duck said he has approached each day with proactive improvement.
“It’s coming in every week -- being reliable and improving on something each day.”
Reflecting on learning from veteran Minkah Fitzpatrick, Duck emphasized how his leadership in communication has shaped the young corner’s growth.
“If you see something tell him and he’ll go off that, but, definitely the communication and the leadership part too.”
Duck also offered positive early chemistry with recent free agent signee cornerback Jack Jones.
“He came in today, stepped right in and made some plays. He’s a real cool dude … real grounded," Duck said.
Big E gets the orange jersey

In a special moment during Saturday’s training camp, the Miami Dolphins awarded Ian Berger, also known as “Big E,” with the “Fan of the Day.”
Big E also won team’s Fan of the Year award back in 2020. He was presented with a signed orange practice jersey by Dolphins running back De’Von Achane.
The Dolphins are off Sunday and will return to practice in front of fans on Monday at 9 a.m. at the Baptist Health Training Complex.
