HARRISON, NJ. — Fresh off a frustrating loss to MLS-leading Cincinnati FC, Inter Miami was looking to get back in the win column.

The Herons did just that, taking down the New York Red Bulls 5-1 at Sports Illustrated Stadium on Saturday night.

Inter Miami was led by superstar Lionel Messi, as he bagged his sixth brace in seven games.

He also added an assist Saturday night, giving him three goal contributions to the five scored by Inter Miami.

The effort gives Messi a total of 12 goals and five assists in his last seven MLS matches.

Inter Miami sits in fifth place in the Eastern Conference with 41 points, holding three games in hand on the four teams above them. Miami trails Cincinnati by seven points for the top spot in the East.

Inter Miami Manager Javier Mascherano praised Messi’s performance.

“Leo Messi, Michael Jordan, Rafa Nadal, these are people that have transcended the sport,” said Mascherano. “We are very privileged the people that are close and can witness this.”

With a week-long break, Mascherano plans to give his players some much needed rest after they played five games within the last two weeks.

“We will use it to give rest to those who are more tired, and with the expectation to recover a couple players that are injured and add them to the roster,” he said.

Inter Miami’s next match is a home game at Chase Stadium. They’ll face Cincinnati, a rematch from Wednesday’s loss, in what should be a premiere MLS battle.
