New dog park aims to boost adoptions in North Miami Beach

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Volunteers and organizers with Florida Power & Light and the Humane Society of Greater Miami are transforming a local dog park with a bigger goal in mind: helping animals find forever homes.

The park, located outside the of the HSGM shelter, is receiving a facelift as volunteers rake, shovel and clear the area to create a welcoming space for dogs and their potential adopters.

“It’s a big need,” HSGM’s Grace Bracamonte told Local 10’s Linnie Supall on Tuesday. “It’s also a welcoming space and an opportunity for us to be able to really showcase the personality of the dog and interact and see if it’s a really good fit for the families and for the dog.”

FPL representatives say the project is part of a broader mission to give families a safe and enjoyable space to meet adoptable pets.

“It’s heartbreaking to see them there, but I think this project is going to help a little bit and move the needle, maybe a little bit, so that we can get more adoptions,” said Addys Kuryla of FPL.

More than 200 dogs and cats currently need homes at the HSGM, with some dogs having lived there for years.

Volunteers are working against the clock to complete the park’s renovation by the end of the day.

“We’re so excited to bring some much needed love here to the dog park,” said volunteer Darlyne Jean-Charles. “When people come here looking for their forever pet, they’ll get to play here with everyone. And even though I’m a cat lady, I’ve had the greatest time with the dogs. I’m almost ready to take one home myself right now.”
