A Miami-Dade judge sentenced a former Miami-Dade County transit employee to life in prison plus 60 years Friday for the 2009 kidnapping and rape of an 18-year-old pregnant woman.
Greg Martin was sentenced by 11th Judicial Circuit Judge Marisa Tinkler Mendez after a jury found him guilty on all counts, rejecting his claim that the encounter was consensual.
On the advice of his defense attorney, Martin declined to address the court before the sentence was imposed.
The victim, whose identity is being withheld, delivered an emotional statement during the hearing, describing the lasting impact of the attack while also expressing hope that Martin could change.
“I do not understand what made you have a heart so dark,” she told Martin. “I just know that what you did really hurt, and it was really hard because there was a point that I lost myself.”
She added, “We all have a chance to change, and I believe and have faith that you can.”
Martin also faces a separate capital murder case in Miami-Dade County. Prosecutors accuse him of raping and murdering a 13-year-old girl in 2000. That case is scheduled to go to trial next year.
