MARGATE, Fla. — First responders rushed to the scene of a fire in Margate on Wednesday morning.
It was burning in the area of the Cross Creek Apartments, located along the 200 block of Southwest 56th Terrace, when firefighters arrived at approximately 8:20 a.m.
Fire crews were able to extinguish the flames within five minutes of their hoses hitting the ground, they said, including the room of the closet where the blaze began.
The fire was inside of a second-floor unit of a two-story apartment building.
Authorities said three people were inside the apartment when the fire broke out, but no injuries have been reported. Sadly, a pet cat did not survive, crews said.
Neighbor Eva James was disturbed to find out what happened to close to her home.
“It’s very sad because losing the cat is to me, like it could have been worse, losing the cat, it’s still a life,” she said. “I still didn’t know something this serious was going on. I was like a few steps away from it.”
Two people were seen in tears following the events that unfolded.
“The family that’s been displaced, fire marshal gave them the info they need to help right now,” said Oscar Rodriguez with Margate Fire Rescue.
An investigation into the cause of the fire remains ongoing.
