MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Fourteen months into her tenure as the head of the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz has made a major shakeup in command staff.
According to Local 10 News’ sources, Assistant Sheriffs’ Eric Garcia, Brian Rafky and Shawn Browne are being forced out of their positions.
The agency released a statement Monday afternoon, which said, in part:
“Effective law enforcement requires ongoing assessment and adjustments to enhance our mission and meet evolving demands. The Miami-Dade Sheriff recognizes that leadership changes are not only routine but also essential for the success of public safety.”
As assistant sheriff, Eric Garcia ran the Patrol Services Unit at MDSO, and just months ago he was publicly praised after graduating from a prestigious criminal justice executive program that focused on leadership.
Assistant Sheriff Brian Rafke has spent nearly three decades as a law enforcement officer, rising up the ranks at the sheriff’s office and even serving the Commander of Intelligence Operations for Super Bowl 54. His most recent duty was as Head of Support Services.
Assistant Sheriff Shawn Browne, who previously ran the Northside District in the county, had been serving as the Head of Investigative Services. He spent decades with the agency, rising up the leadership ladder.
MDSO did not elaborate on the specific changes at the top, only saying, “The individuals affected by these changes have served this agency and our community and we thank them for their dedication and years of service.”
Local 10 News learned one of the three has agreed to stay on with MDSO in a reduced role, but the department has not identified which of the three it is.
