HIALEAH, Fla. — A suspect has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that authorities say occurred outside a Hialeah apartment complex Wednesday morning.
Hialeah police said officers responded to the 1900 block of West 56th Street, just east of the Palmetto Expressway, after they received calls from a neighbor who stated that he heard up to 10 shots just after 6:15 a.m.
A neighbor told Local 10’s Gabrielle Arzola that the shooter ran back inside the complex after firing shots. Another stated that he was getting ready to cook breakfast when he heard a woman scream.
“It sounded like a rifle, and a woman started screaming, ‘No, no, no,”' the neighbor said.
Witness Lisandra Hernandez said it was scary.
“It is terrifying. We are all overwhelmed and very worried,” Hernandez said.
Police said they found a man dead at the scene.
Relatives of the victim told Local 10’s Roy Ramos that the victim, who has not yet been identified, was on his way to work when he was shot and killed.
Eddie Rodriguez, a spokesman for the Hialeah Police Department, told Local 10 that officers discovered the man, who was in his 50s, on the sidewalk.
Police later said the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Dairon Rosas Delgado, was located and arrested in connection with the shooting after being stopped while driving in the area of West Fourth Avenue and West 18th Street in Hialeah.
Investigators said Rosas Delgado lives in the complex across from where the shooting occurred and that it appears the shooting was a “random act of violence.”
Sky 10 flew over the scene just before 9:30 a.m., where a body covered with a tarp could be seen outside the apartment complex as police and SWAT officers surrounded the area.
The shooting left many residents frightened and heartbroken.
“I’ve never heard anything like this,” said a woman who lives nearby. “I’ve been living here since 2001 and I’ve never heard of something so sad like this.”
Rodriguez said the motive remains unclear, and detectives are still working to determine why Rosas Delgado targeted the victim.
Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
