MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A warehouse erupted in flames in northwest Miami-Dade on Thursday morning.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said they responded to a warehouse fire at Global Warehouse Solutions, located in the 20600 block of Northwest 47th Avenue, around 10:45 a.m. Firefighters arrived to find heavy black smoke and flames coming from the warehouse.
They said due to “structural integrity concerns,” defensive operations were initiated, with multiple aerial units attacking the flames from overhead to extinguish the fire. They weren’t sure how long the fire had been burning before crews arrived at the scene.
Because of the need for additional units, authorities said the call was upgraded to a fifth-alarm fire. They said over 48 MDFR units responded to the scene, with Miramar Fire Rescue assisting.
MDFR Chief Ray Jadallah said at least 200 firefighters were at the scene attempting to put the fire under control and keep it from spreading to neighboring brush and properties.
During a news conference at 4:15 p.m., he said that the fire will likely burn throughout the weekend with “varying degrees of fire.”
Sky 10 flew over the scene just after 11 a.m. as firefighters and first responders from Miami-Dade, Miami Gardens, and Miramar worked to extinguish the massive fire, sending thick plumes of smoke across the area.
“To put it in perspective, this warehouse is about the size of two Costos,” Jadallah added.
Miami-Dade’s Department of Environmental Resources Management told Local 10 that their air quality team is “actively monitoring the situation to determine whether regional air quality has been impacted. Preliminary readings do not indicate any regional impacts at this time.”
MDFR officials confirmed that no injuries have been reported due to the fire.
“We’re in a defensive operation,” said MDFR Deputy Fire Chief Danny Cardeso. “From the arrival of the initial companies, the fire had already taken possession of the entire building, making it too dangerous for us to go inside so were operating from the outside trying to control the fire and keep it from spreading.”
Global Warehouse Solutions, a 3PL warehouse which is normally ran for recycling and storage purposes, is located at 20600 NW 47th Ave., just outside of the Miami Gardens city limits and about a half mile south of the county line. It is also just west of Hard Rock Stadium near the Florida Turnpike.
Jadallah confirmed that the warehouse stores a range of items, from shampoo to propane tanks and other highly flammable materials. He said a portion of the roof collapsed due to the fire.
Miami Gardens Police Department Chief Delma Noel-Pratt urged public safety as first responders worked to put out the blaze.
Dr. Frederica S. Wilson Skyway Elementary School in Miami Gardens, just south of the warehouse, is vacant and under construction. Miami-Dade Commissioner Oliver Gilbert told Local 10 News he believes no students or staff were in the building at the time of the blaze.
Somerset Academy in Miramar is also nearby, but the school’s principal told Local 10 News that while they can see the smoke, children and school staff members have been moved indoors and there is no threat to the area.
Officials said there is a large amount of “chemicals burning in the area,” and the smoke could be toxic.
Authorities told Local 10 News there were multiple propane tanks inside the warehouse when the fire broke out. Drivers are being urged to avoid the west side of the area.
They said every fire hydrant and water supply around the warehouse is being used to fight the heavy blaze.
Local 10’s Rosh Lowe spoke with a warehouse worker who said he was “lucky to be alive” after escaping before it erupted.
TRAFFIC ALERTS
MDSO advised drivers that Northwest 47th Avenue from Northwest 199th Street to Northwest 215th Street is completely closed.
Miramar police said officers were deployed to assist, blocking the southbound lanes of Palm Avenue (two lanes) leading into Miami-Dade County. The southbound U-turn lane is also blocked to prevent potential accidents.
Police said traffic cones have been deployed, and motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes until further notice.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
