PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. — Pembroke Park commissioners moved to formally add a residency requirement for elected officials into the town charter — a rule voters already approved back in 1988.
About 85% of voters supported the measure, which requires elected officials to live in Pembroke Park and lose their seat if they move out of town. But that language was never officially written into the charter.
At a special meeting, commissioners voted to direct the town clerk and town attorney to correct that oversight.
Mayor Geoffrey Jacobs was not at the meeting, and Commissioner Ashira Mohammed was also absent.
The move comes as questions surround Jacobs and his residency following a Local 10 News investigation into a property in Fort Pierce that Jacobs was receiving a massive tax exemption on.
“Well, I think it’s important, because if there’s any kind of lack of clarity in something that the public needs to understand, then we need to understand that it was done properly,” Clerk Commissioner Bill Hodgkins said. “This guy moved out of town a year ago and withheld it. To me, that’s fraudulent.”
Jacobs, through his attorney, has denied any wrongdoing and maintains that he lives in Pembroke Park.
