NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — If you’re sick of being stuck in traffic every day, Miami-Dade County is coming up with another option.
According to the county, a new massive public transportation project will connect Aventura, North Miami Beach, Miami Shores, El Portal, Wynwood, the Design District and Little Haiti all to Downtown Miami.
The proposed commuter rail route would use the Florida East Coast Railway.
It would use existing Brightline Miami Central and West Aventura stations and build five new stations in Wynwood, the Design District, Little Haiti, North Miami and at FIU’s north campus.
The FIU location is in North Miami Beach, and the city’s planning and zoning board discussed the project Monday night.
Zafar Ahman is the city’s Community Development Director.
He said the plan is to also build workforce and FIU student housing around the train stop at Northeast 151st Street, along with new businesses.
“You can walk to the station, you can walk to your residence, you can walk to the shopping,” said Ahman.
Project leaders say this will cut auto traffic by nearly 8,000 trips each weekday.
The cost is massive, estimated at over $927 million, about half of which will be covered by a federal grant.
Another $200 million is expected to come from the state, and the rest is locally funded.
Miami-Dade County approved that funding last fall.
The project is currently in the engineering phase, finishing up designs and getting ready for construction.
Everything is expected to be done by 2032.
