MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — A man was arrested early Friday morning after a Florida Highway Patrol trooper said he clocked the driver going 125 mph on Interstate 95 and attempted to flee a traffic stop in Miami Gardens.
According to an arrest report, the trooper was heading north on I-95 near Northwest 151st Street when he spotted a gray Honda Accord speeding, following cars too closely and weaving through traffic without signaling.
The trooper paced the car for about a quarter mile at 125 mph in a 60-mph zone as it approached a construction area, according to the report.
When the driver exited onto State Road 91, the trooper turned on emergency lights to pull him over.
Investigators said the driver, 31-year-old Christopher Yesit Campo, didn’t stop and instead braked suddenly and took evasive actions to avoid a PIT maneuver.
The trooper was eventually able to perform the maneuver and detain him just north of a nearby mile marker, the report stated.
During the arrest, the trooper reported smelling a strong odor of alcohol, noticing glossy, watery eyes and dilated pupils, and seeing what appeared to be a lit marijuana cigarette inside the car.
Campo refused field sobriety exercises and declined to provide a breath sample, according to FHP.
Jail records show Campo is facing charges of reckless driving, dangerous excessive speeding, driving under the influence, and DUI.
As of Friday evening, he was being held on a $1,900 bond at the the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
