Deputies give all clear after potential armed suspect prompts lockdown at 2 Miami-Dade schools

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies have given the “all clear” at Christopher Columbus High School, St. Brendan Catholic Church, and its school campuses after responding Wednesday morning to a report of a potential armed suspect, which authorities later determined was a hoax.

Deputies, along with MDSO’s Priority Response Team, conducted a thorough sweep of both schools, which are located near the 3000 block of Southwest 87th Avenue.

Authorities said there was no active shooter and no threat was found.

Sky 10 was over St. Brendan High School around 11:05 a.m., where several deputies were at the scene with their weapons drawn, roads were blocked off, and traffic was backed up.

Sky 10 then flew over Christopher Columbus High School at about 11:08 a.m., where multiple units remained on scene and parents gathered outside.

Christopher Columbus High School staff released a text message to families stating the school “received a phone call that was deemed credible enough to notify law enforcement and initiate a lockdown out of an abundance of caution.”

The message said deputies responded promptly and confirmed there was no threat. The lockdown has since been lifted, and campus operations have returned to normal.

The text message also stated that seniors will be released at 12:10 p.m., and underclassmen may be picked up beginning at 12:20 p.m.

Authorities determined the report was unfounded after a comprehensive sweep of the campuses.

An MDSO spokesperson also confirmed that at least two students sustained minor injuries while running during the deputy response.

He also warned the public that making hoax calls is “very dangerous,” and said authorities are actively searching for the person responsible, who could face serious criminal charges.
