BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — Friends and family of 35-year-old boxer Jonathan Scibica gathered in a prayer circle Sunday near a Broward County canal as his truck was pulled from the water just yards away.
A yellow tarp covered the windshield as the vehicle was pulled up.
“A bunch of divers and trucks pulled up and said they found a truck,” said James Adelizzi, who lives nearby.
Scibica was last seen early Friday morning at Cheers bar around 4 a.m., according to friends. He was believed to be driving a gray Honda Ridgeline when he left.
Adelizzi, who lives at the Cypress Creek Mobile Home Park near Northeast 62nd Street, said he noticed something unusual outside his home later that morning.
“All I saw was headlights shining across the lagoon,” he said. “The next morning I noticed the gate, someone had driven through it, knocked it off the hinges and into the water.”
Two days later, the truck was found in the canal. Divers with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office responded and recovered the vehicle.
The discovery came as friends and supporters, many from Level Up Boxing and Fitness, were already looking for Scibica.
“All his friends were here,” Adelizzi said. “They were talking to me. It was sad.”
The truck was towed away, and a body was taken by the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office. Authorities have not released details about what led up to the crash.
Friends say Scibica did not live in the mobile home park and are left with questions about how he ended up there and what happened after he left the bar.
