SUNRISE, Fla. — The National Hockey League is hosting a special event ahead of the 2026 Winter Classic.
On Sunday, an all-day, any age event called NHL Street is happening outside Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise.
The big goal of the event is that it is attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the largest one-day street hockey championship.
All the fun began Sunday morning around 9 a.m. and games are expected to stretch throughout the day and into the evening, with the event not expected to wrap up until 11 p.m.
The parking lot of Amerant Bank Arena has been transformed into a hockey players’ paradise, with nine 96x40 foot street hockey rinks, complete with player benches and rink boards.
There was also several food trucks and other fun activities that were set up out there as well, giving the tournament more of a street festival feel.
The event is open to players of all ages and skill levels, featuring fast-paced 3-on-3 action.
Teams from all over the country are competing.
“This event is good for the people involved in hockey,” said youth hockey coach Juan Singer. “In Florida, it’s hard to have ice, but with this ball hockey, maybe people like it and play ice hockey in the future. It’s great for us.”
The record the NHL is hoping to break on Sunday is 1,333 participants.
The best part about the event is that it’s all being done for a good cause, with 100 percent of the money raised from registration fees going straight towards the NHL’s Hockey Fights Cancer initiative, which helps fund game-changing cancer research.
