MIAMI — A Miami man was booked into jail early Friday morning on charges of attempted first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon after police said he shot a man earlier this year.
Miami police said Eugene Rashad Plez, 46, is accused of shooting the victim on Feb. 15 at around 4:30 p.m. near the 2200 block of Northwest 51st Street, in the county’s Brownsville area.
They said officers responded after a ShotSpotter alert detected multiple rounds fired in the area. They said the victim was transported in stable condition to Jackson Memorial Hospital Ryder Trauma Center.
Authorities said surveillance video showed the victim walking with a woman when a gray SUV pulled alongside them.
A man with dreadlocks, later identified as Plez, exited the vehicle, fired at the victim, then fled with the woman in the front passenger seat, according to the report.
The report stated that the shooting appeared to stem from a dispute involving the victim and the woman over a mutual acquaintance. The victim later identified Plez was the shooter while being interviewed by police officers at the hospital.
Detectives said the victim broke down and stated Plez, who goes by “Shank,” shot him and it was hard to believe because they are “family.”
Police said they tracked the gray Ford Explorer used in the shooting to a rental under Plez’s name and collected GPS and license plate data linking him to the scene.
They said Plez had previously been convicted of burglary, grand theft, and driving with a suspended license. Jail records show he was also arrested on a cocaine possession charge.
Plez was taken into custody after law enforcement conducted several days of surveillance, and detectives said he and the woman had fled the area following the shooting.
As of Friday, he is being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. A judge also ordered Plez to stay away from the victim.
