FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A Wilton Manors woman has been arrested in connection with a fatal DUI hit-and-run that killed a pedestrian in Fort Lauderdale last year, police confirmed in an arrest report obtained by Local 10 News on Thursday.
The suspect was identified as Allison Marie Melograno, 41, who was taken into custody on charges of DUI manslaughter and failure to stop or remain at the scene of a crash involving death.
The crash occurred July 11, 2024, just after 9 p.m., in the southbound lanes of the 2900 block of North Federal Highway, according to Fort Lauderdale police.
Investigators said that at 10:51 p.m. the same day, Melograno called police and reported she had been struck by an unknown vehicle at the intersection of Oakland Park Boulevard and North Federal Highway.
Officers responded and found her sitting on the pavement in a parking space next to a vehicle. A blue Tesla was improperly backed into a parking spot and showed damage to the right front side and right-side mirror, police said.
While speaking with Melograno, officers reported noticing an odor of alcohol, slurred speech and watery eyes. Police said it was “obvious that she was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage.”
According to her arrest report, Melograno told officers, “I was driving down U.S. 1 and something flew out in front of my car and I hit it. I tried to go back to the scene, but U.S. 1 was blocked off, so I came home and called 911.”
A blood test was later requested. Investigators said a toxicology report showed Melograno’s blood alcohol content was measured at .071% and .048% approximately six hours after the crash.
Police said video footage from the Tesla showed the vehicle being driven in a “careless manner,” swerving from side to side and straddling lanes before accelerating well beyond surrounding traffic. The vehicle was traveling about 60 mph in a 45 mph zone, authorities said.
According to the arrest report, the video showed a pedestrian crossing from left to right before being struck by the Tesla. “The vehicle takes no evasive action, nor does it slow or stop after striking the pedestrian,” officers wrote in the report.
The victim, whose identity and age were redacted in the report, later died from complications of blunt force injuries sustained in the crash, investigators said. Police also confirmed Melograno had a valid driver’s license at the time.
Melograno appeared in bond court Thursday morning, where probable cause was found. Her bond was set at $85,000.
A judge ordered her not to drive except for work-related purposes, required GPS monitoring with random alcohol testing, and ordered her to surrender her passport.
Jail records show she is being held at the Broward Main Jail.
