POMPANO BEACH, Fla. — Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies on Wednesday identified a suspect in connection with a fatal crash that occurred in May 2023 in Pompano Beach.
Authorities said the crash happened on May 21, 2023, at the intersection of North Andrews Avenue and West Copans Road.
They said Jezaniah Yaneri Gonzalez, 26, of Hollywood, was driving a silver 2012 Ford Focus northbound on North Andrews Avenue as an Infiniti was traveling westbound on Copans Road and turning left to head south on North Andrews Avenue.
The intersection is controlled by a four-way traffic signal. Deputies said the Infiniti had a green left-turn signal, while the Ford had a red light for through traffic.
Investigators said the Infiniti entered the intersection as the lead vehicle in a group of cars making a left turn when the Ford entered the intersection at a high rate of speed. Deputies said Gonzalez was traveling more than 100 mph in a posted 40 mph zone.
According to Gonzalez’s arrest report, the Ford applied heavy braking before impact but was still traveling between 90 and 102 mph when it struck the Infiniti. Both vehicles were disabled, and all occupants were injured.
All involved were transported to Broward Health Medical Center, where a passenger in the Infiniti was pronounced dead.
Authorities said the driver of the Infiniti suffered serious injuries and required hospitalization and surgery. The identities of the victims were redacted in the report.
They said Gonzalez “unlawfully operated a motor vehicle in a reckless manner” by traveling about 103 mph through a steady red light and into an active intersection.
Jail records show Gonzalez is facing one count of vehicular homicide and reckless driving causing serious bodily injury.
As of Wednesday, she was being held on a $50,000 bond at BSO’s North Broward Bureau.
