CORAL GABLES, Fla. — A South Florida investor and the husband of a prominent model and actress is facing a hit-and-run charge after authorities said he ran over a scooter rider with his Audi in Coral Gables on Monday and took off to the couple’s multi-million-dollar mansion in Pinecrest.
James Bailey, 40, is facing a felony hit-and-run charge. He’s married to Devon Aoki, a 43-year-old model and retired actress whose roles included playing the character Suki in the 2003 film “2 Fast 2 Furious,” starring the late Paul Walker.
According to the Coral Gables Police Department, Bailey was driving an Audi SQ7 SUV when he hit a man riding a scooter in the crosswalk at Douglas Road and Giralda Avenue just after 5:15 p.m.
An arrest report states that the victim’s girlfriend told officers that her boyfriend’s “left foot was stuck under the vehicle’s right tire” and that she was “frantically asking (Bailey) to move the vehicle back (to) release (his) foot from underneath the tire.”
Police said Bailey did so, but kept on driving “without rendering aid, providing information, or reporting the crash to police,” leaving the victim with “serious injuries,” including two foot fractures.
Investigators said the woman provided a description of Bailey and said the Audi was captured on “several” automated license plate readers and police cameras. According to the report, officers went to its registered address: the eight-bedroom, seven-bathroom mansion Bailey and Aoki share in the 9300 block of Southwest 59th Avenue.
There, with the help of Pinecrest police, authorities said they encountered Aoki, who said she “did not know the whereabouts” of the SUV.
The report states that as officers were leaving, Bailey pulled up in the SUV and they followed him into the driveway. It states that a CGPD sergeant activated his cruiser’s emergency lights “and called out for (Bailey) to stop walking and come towards him.”
Instead, police said Bailey “ran away” from the sergeant and went inside the home ― which has a $9.1 million market value, according to Miami-Dade Property Appraiser listings ― and locked the front door shut.
Authorities said the Audi “had minor damage consistent with a collision with a pedestrian on a stand-up scooter.”
The report states that “after several minutes of observing (Bailey) walking inside his residence and looking at police officers through the windows,” he walked out and was eventually taken into custody after invoking his right to remain silent.
The CGPD report states that there was no indication of alcohol or drug use.
Facing charges of hit-and-run causing serious bodily injury and resisting without violence, Bailey appeared in Miami-Dade bond court on Tuesday morning.
Miami-Dade Judge Mindy Glazer found probable cause for both charges, ordering Bailey to be held on a $7,500 bond.
As of Tuesday morning, he remained in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, jail records show.
