HIALEAH, Fla. — A barricaded subject has surrendered to police after triggering a large police response in Hialeah on Thursday morning, authorities confirmed.
Hialeah police said officers were at the scene near West Eighth Avenue and 81st Street after a man armed himself and retreated to the rear of a property as SWAT and officers attempted to serve a warrant.
Lt. Eddie Rodriguez, a spokesperson for the Hialeah Police Department, said the incident began as officers approached the location.
Sky 10 video taken just before 9:30 a.m. showed numerous police units positioned near a road closure in the 8200 block of West Eighth Avenue, close to the Puerquito Asado restaurant and multiple automotive shops.
Workers in the area expressed fear when speaking to Local 10’s Jackie Pascale.
“We’ve been here for over 20 years, so it’s kind of worrying and scary,” said Felipe Garcia, who works nearby. “It’s also scary because we’ve got a school -- Hialeah-Miami Lakes (Senior High) -- right behind it. And you see the helicopter right on top of it, so the first thing on your mind is, is there something wrong in the school because of what’s going on lately.”
Authorities said the suspect barricaded himself for at least five hours before surrendering.
No additional details were immediately released.
