NORTH MIAMI, Fla. — A 38-year-old man appeared in bond court Wednesday morning, two days after he was arrested for allegedly grabbing a police officer’s gun in North Miami, and claimed that the court had “zero jurisdiction” over him because he is “Jesus Christ King.”
According to an arrest report, Devon Lane, who is currently living on the streets of Miami, was spotted shortly before 4 p.m. Monday in the area of Northwest Seventh Avenue and 131st Street in North Miami, wearing a hospital gown and screaming at passing vehicles.
Police said responding officers saw Lane walking in the roadway, yelling “Jesus loves you.”
According to the report, an officer was in his marked patrol car when he gave “loud verbal commands” to Lane to get out of the roadway.
But police said Lane ignored the officer.
The officer then got out of his vehicle and made contact with Lane in the median, at which time Lane “balled his fists and aggressively advanced” toward the officer in a “belligerent manner,” the report stated.
According to the report, Lane then charged at the officer and threw a punch at him, but missed.
The officer then redirected Lane to the ground, authorities said.
Police said a struggle ensued and Lane “clamped” onto the officer’s gun in an attempt to remove it from its holster, but the officer was able to remove Lane’s hand from his gun.
According to the report, another officer then arrived at the scene and helped take Lane into custody.
The initial officer sustained minor cuts to his right forearm, left elbow and left knee during the struggle, the report stated.
Lane was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
In bond court Wednesday, Lane told the judge, “The courts don’t have zero jurisdiction over me -- Jesus Christ King, Jesus Christ King. The court don’t have zero jurisdiction over Jesus Christ King, your honor.”
“Oh, OK. Well, I do and your bond is $2,500,” Miami-Dade Judge Mindy Glazer responded.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Lane remained held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
