MIAMI — Surveillance videos obtained Friday by Local 10 News show the moments multiple jewelry items were stolen from a Miami jewelry store, allegedly by the store’s own employee.
Miami police confirmed Nubia Milena Torres-Cubillos, 45, a Colombian national currently living in Miami, was arrested Sept. 9 on accusations that she stole multiple gold links from a broken Cuban link bracelet at the jewelry store she worked at.
Police said the thefts occurred from June to August, during which time Torres-Cubillos would conceal the links in a box that she had placed on a shelf, repositioning it at one time to “reduce visibility.”
According to her arrest report, which did not name the jewelry store, on June 26, Torres-Cubillos concealed some of the links inside paper, took them to her desk and then placed them inside her pocket before walking to the restroom.
Torres-Cubillos “appeared to walk unnaturally in an effort to avoid the links making noise,” the report stated.
According to the report, on July 3, Torres-Cubillos began moving boxes while pretending to be organizing, when she was, in fact, relocating the box that had contained the other links she had allegedly stolen.
Police said she entered a co-worker’s office during a break period, removed the links from the box in question, placed them briefly on the desk and then slid them into her purse.
Authorities said two of the stolen links were pawned – one on June 28 for $3,500 and one on July 5 for $1,800, police said.
According to detectives, it was discovered during the investigation that Torres-Cubillos stole other items from her employer and pawned them, including an 18K yellow gold Van Cleef style bracelet, pawned for $400; a 10K yellow gold tennis bracelet, pawned for $500; an 18K yellow gold Van Cleef style bracelet, pawned for $745; an 18K yellow gold Van Cleef style bracelet, pawned for $755; an 18K yellow gold necklace with emerald stone, pawned for $250, and an 18K rose gold Van Cleef style bracelet, pawned for $250.
Torres-Cubillos was arrested on charges of grand theft, organized scheme to defraud, being a secondhand dealer without verification of ownership and dealing in stolen property.
At the time of her arrest, she invoked her right to counsel, police said.
