DAVIE, Fla. — One person has died following a two-vehicle crash that occurred early Friday morning on Florida’s Turnpike in Davie, the Florida Highway Patrol confirmed.
According to troopers, the crash occurred just after 3:20 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the highway on the Interstate 595 overpass.
A Local 10 News crew was in the area as a white vehicle that was heavily damaged was still at the scene, along with a FedEx tractor-trailer that was also involved in the collision.
An FHP report states that a 2021 Mercedes-Benz SUV was stopped in the center lane when a 2015 FedEx freightliner tractor-trailer pulling two trailers crashed into the SUV.
Troopers said the SUV then traveled in a southeasterly direction before colliding into a concrete median wall.
A 36-year-old Hispanic woman from Miami who was inside the Mercedes was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
Troopers said the driver of the SUV, who age and identity have not been released, was transported to Broward Health Medical Center with serious injuries.
The FedEx driver, identified as a 53-year-old white male from Naples, was not injured in the crash, troopers confirmed.
Authorities said the investigation into the circumstances leading up to the collision remain under investigation.
