Broward mother furious after daughter consumes marijuana edible at Fort Lauderdale high school

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A Broward County mother is speaking out after her 14-year-old daughter unknowingly ate a marijuana-infused gummy at Stranahan High School in Fort Lauderdale. The teen, who thought the gummy was just candy, became ill and was hospitalized.

Tshura Jones, the mother, says her daughter was misled by a classmate who handed her the edible.

The incident occurred around 9 a.m. on Wednesday, when Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue responded to multiple students reporting adverse reactions after consuming the gummies. The district later confirmed that several students were affected.

Jones expressed frustration, saying she trusted the school with her daughter’s safety.

“I feel as though I left my daughter in the hands of Stranahan high school for safety,” she said.

Other parents have voiced concerns about the school’s security, calling for better measures to prevent students from accessing drugs on campus.

Diane Kohler, a grandparent, said, “They need to do a search to the kids a little bit better than what they’re doing. It makes me think twice about sending her here.”

Another parent, Satya Palmehmi, asked, “How are the kids behaving in the school? How do they have access to marijuana drugs in the school?”

After consuming the gummy, Jones’ daughter felt dizzy and disoriented, and was taken to the hospital.

“She didn’t know how she got there,” Jones said, describing her daughter as unresponsive with an IV in her.

While her daughter is now recovering at home, Jones was upset to learn that her daughter was placed on a ten-day suspension for being under the influence. Jones is now considering pressing charges against the student who distributed the laced gummies.

The Broward County School District has not commented, citing an ongoing investigation. Jones remains concerned about her daughter’s safety and the availability of drugs in schools.
