FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — World AIDS Day, observed internationally on Dec. 1 to raise awareness about the global AIDS epidemic, drew crowds to Fort Lauderdale Beach on Sunday for a night of remembrance, advocacy and music.
Broadway stars Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal — known for originating the roles of Mark and Roger in Rent — headlined the event, performing onstage as attendees gathered to honor those affected by HIV and AIDS.
“They are passionate about it. The passion that exists in this music speaks to everyone,” attendee Thia Thomas said.
The event was organized by CAN Community Health.
“Not only are patients affected by HIV, but also allies and the entire community who know someone affected by HIV,” said Kal Gajraj, the group’s senior vice president and chief marketing officer.
This year’s observance followed the Trump administration’s decision to no longer recognize World AIDS Day, first marked in 1988.
“We’re here. We’re strong. We are responding as a community,” Gajraj said. “The message is ‘no day but today.’”
The CDC estimates more than 39 million people worldwide have died from AIDS, and more than 1 million people in the U.S. are living with HIV or AIDS.
“It’s still here,” attendee Maia Wilson said. “It hasn’t left.”
For many, the event served as a moment of remembrance.
“Growing up in the early ’80s, seeing a lot of people die — it was a horrible time,” attendee Charles Longwell said.
Nearly 30 years after its debut, the message of Rent continues to resonate with audiences honoring lives lost and advocating for awareness.
