Body camera footage shows deputy open fire on murder suspect

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — It’s been over two months since a murder suspect was shot while being taken into custody in Miami Gardens.

Now, new footage is revealing what led a deputy to fire his weapon as that suspect was being apprehended.

The body camera video was released by the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office and shows the moments deputies shot 27-year-old Isaiah Collins.

According to authorities, Collins was wanted for a double murder, accused of taking the lives of a man named Octavis Myers and a young woman named Tiara Belizaire.

Sky 10 was over the scene when both were found dead inside a Pembroke Pines home.

Days later, on Sept. 14, an off-duty deputy spotted Collins in a Miami Gardens park.

Investigators said Collins took off and ran all the way across Florida’s Turnpike before jumping into a canal.

Then, Collins climbed up a tree overhanging the water, preventing deputies from reaching him.

This all happened near Northwest 191st Street and Sunshine State Parkway in Miami Gardens.

As deputies plead with Collins to come down, they said he was hiding his right hand in his pants.

A deputy then pointed his gun at Collins, demanding him to surrender.

Investigators say Collins then made a “rapid hand movement” which forced the deputy to fire, striking Collins in the left hand.

The video ends with deputies taking Collins into custody.

He survived the shooting and now faces two counts of first-degree murder.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is still investigating why the deputy fired his weapon.

Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said she released this video out of transparency and public trust.
