FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A couple fell behind on their mortgage payments, and their belongings ended up in piles outside of the house in Fort Lauderdale, neighbors said.
The bank sold the foreclosed house across from Floranada Park and Floranada Elementary School at an auction in August, records show.
The new owner, who plans to sell the house along Northeast 14 Way, near 53 Street, had to hire workers to clean up.
“The trash and the debris was stacked high,” said Dell Cassy, of D&D Waste Removal, adding it was all inside of a house with ceilings that were eight to nine feet high.
Diego Pinzon, a neighbor, described the man who used to live at the house as a nice guy.
“He hoarded a lot more than we knew, but he got evicted ... we will wish him the best,” Pinzon said.
Cassy said workers were there day and night since Thursday to clear the house and the back, side, and front yards.
“I have lived here for 42 years, and I had never seen anything like this happen before,” Ricardo Shapiro, a neighbor, said, adding, “It looked like a hurricane went through here.”
The cleanup effort appeared to be complete by Monday night. Code compliance officers had an open case and were set to inspect the property on Tuesday.
“A lot of people suffer different things,” Cassy said, also adding, “This could happen to anybody. Literally, people think, ‘Oh, it’s just this guy.’ No, it could happen to anybody.”
