COCONUT CREEK, Fla. — A 71-year-old man was arrested on Monday after being found with a holstered gun on school property at Atlantic Technical College in Coconut Creek, according to police.
Officers with the Coconut Creek Police Department said Leonard Andrew Levy was taken into custody by two on-site school resource officers after a staff member alerted them to his presence near Building 11 at the school, located at 4700 Coconut Creek Parkway.
Authorities say there is no evidence that Levy unholstered the 9mm gun while on campus.
They said the college is clearly marked with signs stating “No firearms allowed on premises.” Despite recent changes to Florida’s open carry laws, guns remain prohibited on school property.
When asked why he was carrying a gun on school property, declined to answer, according to his arrest report.
Levy’s arrest report did not say whether he is connected to the school, but it did say that he is employed with Cambridge Security.
Jail records show Levy is facing one count of illegal possession of a firearm on school property.
He was being held on a $25,000 bond at the Broward Main Jail as of Tuesday morning.
