GOP gala in Doral highlights party priorities

DORAL, Fla. — Republican leaders gathered Saturday at Trump National Doral for the Christian Family Coalition’s Freedom Gala, outlining their priorities for the coming legislative session — though not all were willing to take questions.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier declined to speak with Local 10’s Aaron Maybin before the event, directing inquiries to his staff.

Maybin had sought to ask him about the Alligator Alcatraz case, his recent loss in the Trump presidential library lawsuit and his campaign.

Uthmeier, the event’s keynote speaker, focused his remarks on prosecuting child predators. “We are going to go after every single child predator,” he told the crowd.

Some lawmakers did take questions.

State Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez said she plans to file a bill creating a pilot program giving state employees access to weight-loss medication.

State Rep. Alex Rizo highlighted property taxes and education as top issues, saying government “must work for all the people.”

The event came as political momentum shifts in the region: Miami-Dade flipped from blue to red last spring, while Democrats saw strong results nationally this month.

On Sunday, the Miami-Dade Democratic Party is set to host its own event with local leaders and two U.S. senators as it looks ahead to 2026.
