MIAMI — A 19-year-old Fort Lauderdale woman has been arrested in connection with a robbery that police said turned violent at a JD Sports store in Miami earlier this year.
According to an arrest affidavit, Kennedy Johnson was identified as one of three suspects accused of stealing Nike merchandise and attacking a store employee during a March 14 robbery at the JD Sports, located at 3801 NW Seventh Street.
Investigators said Johnson and two accomplices — Sherdenn Hanna Grant, 20, and Tramyah Cache Smith, 28, — entered the store, grabbed multiple Nike hoodies and pants, and tried to leave without paying.
When the merchandise manager and another employee attempted to lock the doors, Miami police said Johnson and Grant kicked the manager several times before fleeing.
They said the suspects took off in a black BMW SUV that was later captured on surveillance cameras leaving the Centro City Plaza, according to the report.
Detectives with the Miami Police Department’s Tactical Robbery Unit said they used facial recognition technology and surveillance video to identify all three suspects.
They said the store’s manager and a witness both later picked Johnson, Grant and Smith out of photo lineups.
Fort Lauderdale police later stopped two of the suspects in the same BMW, where officers found new Nike apparel matching the stolen merchandise, according to the affidavit.
Jail records show Johnson is facing one count of strongarm robbery.
Johnson had an out-of-county warrant for her arrest and was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as of Wednesday afternoon.
Booking information and charges for Grant and Smith weren’t immediately available.
