‘Please stay with us’: Pastor recalls trying to save slain Miami-Dade deputy

Deputy Devin Jaramillo honored after being killed in line of duty

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Loved ones, fellow officers and community members gathered Sunday to honor Miami-Dade Deputy Devin Jaramillo, 27, who was shot and killed while on duty Friday afternoon in Kendall.

A growing memorial of flowers and candles has taken shape near the scene along Southwest 128th Street, where investigators say Jaramillo was murdered after responding to a minor traffic crash.

A nearby pastor, Damon Phillips, said he rushed outside when he heard gunfire.

“I heard gunshots, and I went to look at what was going on, and I heard the officer screaming,” Phillips said.

Phillips said he performed CPR on the deputy until paramedics arrived.

“I ran to him just to help him out. I was on the floor doing CPR — prayed for him at the same time,” he said.“I was screaming, ‘Please stay with us. Please stay with us.’”

Jaramillo was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said Jaramillo was killed after a physical struggle with the suspect.

“He disarmed our deputy of his own service weapon and used it to shoot him multiple times,” Cordero-Stutz said.

The suspect then got back into his car and took his own life, investigators said.

Cordero-Stutz described Jaramillo as a “homegrown hero” with a bright future in law enforcement. Before joining the Miami-Dade Police Department, he served with the Coral Gables Police Department, where he was named Officer of the Month in 2023.

On Saturday, Jaramillo’s body was escorted from the Medical Examiner’s Office to a funeral home as officers from across South Florida stood in solemn tribute.

Phillips said his thoughts remain with the deputy’s family.

“May his soul rest in perfect peace,” he said. “For them to be strong — the family stay strong in a time like this.”

Authorities said it remains unclear what sparked the confrontation. The investigation is ongoing, and funeral arrangements are being finalized.
